Microaggressions are problematic because they subtly perpetuate outdated gender stereotypes and preconceived biases -- reinforcing gender inequality, resulting in normalized discrimination and/or mistreatment of coworkers.
Examples of hostile sexism include: Using sexist language or insults. Making threatening or aggressive comments based on a person’s gender or sex. Harassing or threatening someone for defying gender norms. Treating people as subordinates based on their sex or gender and punishing them when they “step out of line”.
The 6 microaggression themes we identified in this study provide a basis for designing bias prevention training that is specific to the behaviors that faculty encounter in their professional environments and may be useful in designing training that targets real-life experiences.
