Coloureds ( Afrikaans: Kleurlinge) refers to members of multiracial ethnic communities in South Africa who have ancestry from African, European, and Asian people. The intermixing of different races began in the Cape province of South Africa, with European settlers intermixing with the indigenous Khoi tribes, Indian and Asian slaves of the region.
The long process of mixing and acculturation led to the extinction of several Khoisan languages; most coloured people speak Afrikaans as a first language and most still live in the Western and Northern Cape provinces, where they comprise an overall majority of the population.
