This lab experiment measured the running speed along a 6.7km route using a moving vehicle technique. Data on travel times, delays, and traffic volumes were collected during trips in both the eastward and westward directions.
Speed data is needed for a variety of traffic analyses. Spot speed data refers to measurement of individual speeds of vehicles passing a point on a roadway. Care must be taken to conduct the study appropriately so that the sample data will adequately reflect speed characteristics of the population.
Spot speeds are useful to study paints of congestion, for locating traffic signals, or for enforcing speed limits. Running speeds are useful to assess the traffic capacity of highways.

In this laboratory activity, a distance of 0.5 km between two points at particular location is chosen and a time for a vehicle passing through from first point to another point is recorded. The running speed is measured by dividing the distance passing through with the time taken.
