If you cancel your flight, you can ask to have your award miles put back into your account with no fee. Depending on the situation, you have options for how to redeposit your miles: For a reservation, use the My Trips section on united.com or the United app.
LifeMiles is borderline scammy. They charge you to redeem, charged me to “reinstate” my points after flight was Covid cancelled, just so they can charge you again. Ultimately I just let my miles expire as it isn’t worth the headache of point 1 above.
It is possible to buy mileage points with United Airlines' frequent flyer program. But doesn't seem like much anyone could do with $165 worth of points and it would be traceable to a frequent flyer account.
