Short distance sailing is a term which is applied to sailing along a rhumb-line for distances less than 600 nautical miles. From the formulas derived above, the following are used extensively in short distance sailing:
Over a longer oceanic passage, it makes sense to travel on a Great Circle Circle than the Rhumb Line due to the extra time and energy involved. Sailing between Cadiz (Spain) and Miami (US), this could amount to a day’s sailing over the passage (150 NM less).
Sail Racing. Offshore Racing Sailors Find the Fastest Route. Offshore racing sailors will always find the fastest route. That is, after all, the whole point of the exercise. Often that means sailing the rhumb line, i.e., the shortest, most direct course between the start and finish.
