INTRODUCTION. Speed is an important transportation consideration because it relates to safety, time, comfort, convenience, and economics. Spot speed studies are used to determine the speed distribution of a traffic stream at a specific location.
Spot Speed Study Purposes: Establishing the speed zone of new or existing speed limit or enforcement practices. To determine speeds at the problem locations; to validate whether speeds are too high. For traffic operation and control; to establish speed limits. to determine safe speeds at curves.
Speed data is needed for a variety of traffic analyses. Spot speed data refers to measurement of individual speeds of vehicles passing a point on a roadway. Care must be taken to conduct the study appropriately so that the sample data will adequately reflect speed characteristics of the population.
