For those of us on the status hamster wheel, miles are often earned faster than we can burn them (I have 500k atm). For others, travel isn't a regular activity and miles may expire. Either way, it's free money for an airline that never has to provide anything in return. There are other factors, of course.
to answer your larger question, yes airline miles are a sham. so are car points and hotel points. they're all dynamically priced now so demand is a factor. you can fly to Alaska in January and I bet it's a great deal.
