Akaka falls is a state park with a small 100 foot falls which is hard to see and largely forgettable, and a 420 foot horses tail fall into a round canyon. Very beautiful. Paved path. Safe and easy to get to and navigate. There’s paid parking but you can park by the road for free and pay an attendant $1 a piece to see the falls.

We started walking to the right, past 100-feet tall Kahuna Falls, and after 20-25-minute slow walk reached Akaka Falls. From the viewing area we saw the entire Akaka Falls top to bottom with its pool. Spectacular views! Great photos and selfies too. Akaka Falls – the paved walk with the waterfall in the background
Directions to the ʻAkaka falls. The ʻAkaka falls state park is about 11 miles north of Hilo on the end of ʻAkaka Falls Road (Highway 220), 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu. The parking area is open between 8:30 am and 6 pm. The park itself is open to walk-ins between sunrise and sunset.
