History. Polynesian inhabitants settled on the island centuries before others arrived, as shown by excavations dating from 200 to 600 CE. These first inhabitants, originally from the Marquesas Islands, lived undisturbed for around five centuries until a second wave arrived by sea-canoe from Tahiti.
