This document describes a laboratory activity for a Highway Engineering course involving a running speed study. Students will use a moving vehicle technique to collect travel time and delay data along a test route.
In this laboratory activity, a distance of 0.5 km between two points at particular location is chosen and a time for a vehicle passing through from first point to another point is recorded. The running speed is measured by dividing the distance passing through with the time taken.

The speed and delay studies give the running speeds, overall speeds, fluctuations in speeds and the delay between two stations of a road spaced far apart. They also give the information such as amount, location, duration frequency and causes of the delay in traffic stream.
