12 wrz 2023 · The 1950s saw Varig begin flying internationally, and on June 30th, 1953, the airline launched its first flights to Buenos Aires, with the routing Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paulo-Porto Alegre-Montevideo-Buenos Aires.
Based on hearsay and reading previous Trip Advisees' posts, my fiance and I can't decide if we feel comfortable depending on Varig for our internal flights in Brazil. What have current experiences with this airline been? Thanks for your help!
19 sie 2022 · Varig was once one of the largest and better-known South American airlines. It was founded as early as 1927, and for decades was the largest international carrier out of Brazil. Its demise began with financial difficulties in the early 2000s.
VARIG (acronym for Viação Aérea RIo-Grandense, Rio Grandean Airways) was the first airline founded in Brazil, in 1927. From 1965 until 1990, it was Brazil's leading airline and virtually its only international one.
The Brasilian aviation administration has said it will back Varig including possibly international passengers by chartering planes (which apparently has happened to get a large quantity of Brasilians home from the World Cup in Germany already).
Varig advised that currently they fly to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Fortaleza, Salvador, Recife, Manaus (domestic routes), Frankfurt and Buenos Aires (international routes) with a total of 10 planes. Besides these destinations, Varig operates the Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo air bridge (shuttle) service daily.
