I am flying from Canada to the US. The fare type is K and the app says Basic Economy. Am I allowed a carry on, or do I have to pay for a checked bag?
I started flying basic economy this year, and the rules are not clearly explained. Domestic US tickets on basic economy do not get a carryon. Dublin to Newark is international transatlantic, so those flights ‘do’ get a carry on.
There is no carry-on with Basic Economy on domestic flights. The only options are personal item or checked bag. So if your gym bag is deemed too large to be a personal item (which must go under the seat in front of you), you’ll have to pay the fee to check it and it will go with baggage under the plane.
You can carry a small personal and a checked if you're flying across the atlantic or pacific, according to their website today. I've been wondering this, too, so am glad someone posted the united link. 22x14x9 max size, & personal should go under the seat.
If you have a United explorer card you can take a carry on even if you book basic economy, as well as check a bag for free. There is a yearly fee, but if you fly at least twice a year then it’s worth it.

United is the only one of the major airlines to have this restriction, so that’s a major catch, as you can only travel with a personal item.
