It literally means “I see you.” More than words of politeness, sawubona carries the importance of recognizing the worth and dignity of each person. It says, “I see the whole of you—your experiences, your passions, your pain, your strengths and weaknesses, and your future. You are valuable to me.”
To enable us to enhance our connections through gentle rituals, I started a practice of seeing others based on the Zulu word Sawubona, which is a common greeting in parts of South Africa. It means, “I see you,” and the response is, “I see you too,” or “I am here.”
However, in South Africa there is a beautiful greeting in isiZulu: “Sawubona”. It is the equivalent of our “hello”, but with a much deeper meaning. When Zulus greet each other with a “sawubona”, they are literally saying “I see you” or, to be more exact, “We see you”.
