White Pines Forest State Park. Located in the heart of the Rock River valley, this charming 385-acre park is the south boundary of the old Chicago-Iowa Trail. History tells us that this was for years the principal route east and west across the northern part of the state.

Salem is located in central Marion County. U.S. Route 50 passes through the city center as Main Street, leading east 26 miles (42 km) to Flora and west 23 miles (37 km) to Carlyle. Illinois Route 37 (Broadway) crosses US 50 in the center of town, leading north 7 miles (11 km) to Alma and south 15 miles (24 km) to Dix.

1. River Trail, Starved Rock State Park Utica. If I was asked to name the number one hiking destination in the northern half of Illinois, I would name Starved Rock State Park, not just for the River Trail but for all the small connecting trails that loop into and out of the canyons. Canyons in Illinois?
