Pacing. Most of the investigative work immortalized as muckraking first surfaced in monthly magazines. Groundbreaking exposés like Tarbell’s “History of the Standard Oil Company” and Baker’s “Following the Color Line” were rationed out, month by month, like serial fiction.

Ray Stannard Baker was born in Michigan in 1870. He joined McClure's Magazine, where he worked with Lincoln Steffens and Ira Tarbell in the kind of investigative journalism that became known as muckraking. Baker himself was involved in exposing railroad and financial corruption.
Baker was a leading “muckraking” journalist along with Lincoln Steffens, Ida Tarbell and William Allen White. He became a close associate of President Wilson and in 1925 became his official biographer.
