If you use Vim, the pdftk plugin is a good way to explore the document in an ever-so-slightly less raw form, and the pdftk utility itself (and its GPL source) is a great way to tease documents apart.

Portable Document Format (PDF), standardized as ISO 32000, is a file format developed by Adobe in 1992 to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems.
This example shows how to add a page-level output intent to a PDF page, which is a new feature of PDF 2.0. This PDF has a file-level PDF/X output intent, and also has a page-level PDF/X output intent on page 1 that differs from the document-level output intent.
