The observatory operates from the campus of the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope that was established in 1820 in the suburb of Observatory, Cape Town. The major observing facilities are, however, located near the town of Sutherland some 370 kilometres (230 mi) [2] from Cape Town .
