It is estimated that 1.4 million Americans and 25 million people worldwide identify as transgender and that 0.6% of Americans experience gender dysphoria.
Gender dysphoria (GD) occurs when individuals experience clinically significant distress because of an incongruence between their assigned gender and experienced gender. In this chapter, we define GD as well as describe prevalence and comorbidity, assessment and treatment of GD, and key accomplishments in the field and future directions.
