Burr’s map was the first large-scale map of Texas to show all of the region extending to include the Arkansas River and the Texas Panhandle. Burr’s map formed the basis for the Young and Mitchell map, although the latter included notable improvements.

Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains.
