The paved road leads you past the vegetation of Chain of Craters Road into the arid, scrubby environment of the Ka'u Desert. Camp Kulanaokuaiki is about four miles down Hilina Pali Road followed by the head of the 6.3 mile Mauna Iki Trail and later the old Kipuka Nene Campground.

Along the way, you’ll pass through old craters of various shapes and sizes, hiking trails, barren lava fields, petroglyphs, a sea arch and more.
