21 mar 2022 · Free air on CT or Pneumoperitoneum often indicates a life threatening perforation of bowel. There are many causes but a few of the most common are stomach ulcers and diverticulitis. Others can be from medical procedures like colonoscopy where the bowel wall is perforated.

8 cze 2016 · The presence of free air within the abdomen (pneumoperitoneum) can result in both sides of the bowel wall becoming visible (this is known as Rigler’s sign). Causes of pneumoperitoneum include a perforated abdominal viscus (e.g. perforated bowel, perforated duodenal ulcer) and recent abdominal surgery.

Free gas, or pneumoperitoneum, is gas or air trapped within the peritoneal cavity, but outside the lumen of the bowel. Pneumoperitoneum can be due to bowel perforation, or due to insufflation of gas (CO2 or air) during laparoscopy.
21 cze 2021 · Abstract. Postoperative intraperitoneal or ectopic free air may occur after abdominal surgery, gynecologic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or endoscopic procedures and, in rare cases, represent gastrointestinal perforation, requiring emergency laparotomy.
Axial postcontrast CT abdomen in excretory phase demonstrates free air in the retroperitoneum adjacent to the 2nd and 3rd portions of the duodenum, surrounding the inferior vena cava, in the anterior and posterior pararenal spaces (arrows), and within the lateral abdominal wall.
