I have a MacMini for personal use and a MacBook Pro for work. I connect both to an external monitor because sometimes I need more screen real estate when working on the laptop. I connect the MacMini via HDMI and the MBP via USB-C/VGA adapter, and the monitor lets me swap between the input method. That works for me.
