Distance is the length of the path taken by an object whereas displacement is the simply the distance between where the object started and where it ended up. For example, lets say you drive a car. You drive it 5 miles east and then 3 miles west.

Distance refers to the amount of space between two points. It is a scalar quantity that only considers magnitude and not direction.
What you need to know: LOCATION – the position of something on the earth’s surface. SPACE – The physical gap or distance between two objects. PLACE – A specific point on earth with human and physical characteristics that distinguish it from other places. PATTERN – The arrangement of objects on earth’s surface in relationship to one another.
The distance between two points on a map: If two cities are located 500 kilometers apart on a map, that is the distance between them. The distance between two planets: The distance between Earth and Mars varies depending on their positions in their respective orbits, but can range from 34 million miles to 249 million miles.
