Friction of distance is a core principle of geography that states that movement incurs some form of cost, in the form of physical effort, energy, time, and/or the expenditure of other resources, and that these costs are proportional to the distance traveled.

The theory is based upon the concept of the friction of distance "where distance itself hinders interaction between places. The farther two places are apart, the greater the hindrance", or cost. For example, one is less likely to travel across town to purchase a sandwich than walk to the corner store for the same sandwich.
Absolute distance - Distance in quantitative terms; such as miles or kilometers. Relative distance - Qualitative distance; such as 20 min south, 30 min north, description of place. Clustering - How close objects are over a geographical space. Dispersal - How far objects are spread out.

Absolute Distance- is an exact measure of the separation between two points using a standard, such as inches, meters, or miles. Relative Distance- is when less precise but often meaningful measures are used to describe separation between two points.
