  1. 31 maj 2016 · Symmetry Elements. A symmetry operation is an action that leaves an object looking the same after it has been carried out. For example, if we take a molecule of water and rotate it by 180° about an axis passing through the central O atom (between the two H atoms) it will look the same as before.

  2. The symmetry element associated with an inversion, is the inversion center, also called center of symmetry. It is a single point. When an inversion operation is performed, then each point of the object is moved through the inversion center to the other side.

  3. A molecule has a center of symmetry when, for any atom in the molecule, an identical atom exists diametrically opposite this center an equal distance from it. In other words, a molecule has a center of symmetry when the points (x,y,z) and (−x,−y,−z) are identical.

  4. The Symmetry Gallery - A collection of over 120 unique molecules and polyhedra with interactive display of all symmetry elements and animation of all operations. The molecules are organized by point group, so you can select examples to demonstrate particular symmetry elements.

  5. The symmetry elements that a molecule may possess are: E - the identity. The identity operation consists of doing nothing, and the corresponding symmetry element is the entire molecule. Every molecule has at least this element. Cn - an n-fold axis of rotation. Rotation by 360°/n leaves the molecule unchanged. The H2O molecule above has a C2 axis.

  6. Centrosymmetry. In crystallography, a centrosymmetric point group contains an inversion center as one of its symmetry elements. [1] In such a point group, for every point (x, y, z) in the unit cell there is an indistinguishable point (-x, -y, -z).

  7. Center of Symmetry. If a straight line drawn from each atom of a molecule through a certain point meets an equivalent atom equidistant from the point, we call the point the center of symmetry of the molecule. The center of symmetry may or may not be occupied by an atom. The designation for the center ofsymmetry, or center ofinversion, is i.
