Okay, before anyone freaks out: status goals aren’t changing. AA is just making moves to encourage people to join AAdvantage, like 6 extra months to use trip credits, which is pretty fair given it’s free and stupid easy to sign up for. That’s about it.

It's much more difficult post-SkyMiles updates to obtain status through spend than AA's Loyalty Points program makes it, because there are far fewer qualifying spend opportunities or boosts. For ex., there's no status Multiplier on points for flights on Delta, whereas with AA, a PP can earn 9x base fare dollars as LPs.
It's free to join, and free to earn and spend points (referred to as "miles"). There are several ways to earn miles – through flying with AA, spending on an AA-branded credit card, or shopping through an AA-branded shopping portal. Miles earned can then be redeemed for flights.
