Crane wore a mask, that was a seemingly a poorly-stitched burlap sack with a hangman's noose that dangled around the neck. The mask had a built-in re-breather and acted as a gas mask, in addition to enhancing the effect of the hallucinations in his experiments.
Plot. In Gotham City, after falling down a well and getting swarmed by bats, a young Bruce Wayne develops a fear of them. At the opera with his parents, Bruce becomes unsettled by performers masquerading as bats and asks to leave. Outside, mugger Joe Chill murders Bruce's parents in front of him.
However, Scarecrow's plans went awry when Batman crashed into his vehicle mid-transit. Unmasking him as a strangely happy Crane (possibly due to the fear he felt when Batman arrived), Batman tied the Scarecrow up and left him for the police with the Batmen and Chechen gangsters.
Dr. Jonathan Crane : [sighs, then matter-of-factly] Would you like to see my mask? I use it in my experiments. [takes out the Scarecrow mask]
