It has happened a few times now and the screen is impossibly large so I cant negotiate round it. The letters now look at least 64pt or more. How do I get the screen back to normal? I've tried replicating the cursor movements and navigating round the edges, turning the email site off and loging out. Nothing works.

Use the Zoom control at the right, bottom of the Outlook window. If you are using a mouse with a wheel control, click the Reading Pane, press Ctrl, and roll the scroll wheel. Rolling the wheel away from you makes the contents larger, rolling the wheel toward you makes the contents smaller.
