http://mapper.acme.com is a great resource that allows you to pull up USGS topo maps through a google maps interface. I use this for on the fly, casual use such as planning hikes and bushwhacks. If you have access to ESRI's ArcGIS software, there are servers that allow you to download USGS topo maps to use in your own custom maps.
