Over the years when trip planning, we’ve found that Google doesn’t always show us all of our camping options.
This map allows you to see state forest boundaries as well as rustic state forest campgrounds and look for areas that permit dispersed camping. Remember, you must be at least 1 mile for a rustic state forest campground in order to dispersed camp.
There are 32 free Michigan camping spots. That means you’ll need to be prepared to boondock or wild camp without running water, electricity, garbage service, or shower facilities. Before going boondocking, familiarize yourself with the 7 Leave No Trace Principles.
Although both allow for free, dispersed camping, the rules and regulations in place for the National Forests or Ohio State Forests and State Parks are much different. We’ve outlined the basics you’ll need to know for each entity below.

7 maj 2021 · Opportunities for camping in Michigan state parks are abundant. There are 360 campsites dotted around the 5,000-acre Ludington state park, with 3 modern campgrounds divided into 3 areas: Beechwood, Cedar, and Pines. There are also mini cabins for rent and hike-in sites available.
