Then I either use a tape measure, or the ol' Mark I Eyeball to approximate the distance. Again, I don't care if someone is exactly 5" away - if it's roughly 5", they're 5" away; if it's closer to 6", they're 6" away. I definitely don't worry about strictly measuring base to base or mid-point to mid-point, even when I use a tape measure.
