For most of the route, it parallels US 1 about 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 km) to the east, though the two share pavement in Raleigh, North Carolina. US 501 from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Buena Vista, Virginia. The highway runs southeast–northwest, meeting its parent in Aberdeen and Sanford.
In the U.S. state of Virginia, US 1 runs north–south through South Hill, Petersburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Alexandria on its way from North Carolina to the 14th Street bridges into the District of Columbia.

U.S. Highway 1 ( US 1) is a north–south United States Numbered Highway which runs along the East Coast of the U.S. between Key West, Florida, and the Canada–United States border near Fort Kent, Maine. In North Carolina, US 1 runs for 174.1 miles (280.2 km) across the central region of the state.
Immediately upon entering Virginia, Route 1 heads through Arlington and Alexandria, then south to historic Fredericksburg and then to Downtown Richmond. South of Richmond, Route 1 traverses Petersburg before crossing into North Carolina. Just south of Alexandria, Route 1 passes very close to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.
