15 maj 2024 · Systemwide upgrades are capacity controlled, and American Airlines decides if and when to release seats for upgrade depending on a number of factors. If an upgrade is not immediately confirmable, you can waitlist and hope to receive the upgrade if space opens.

A systemwide upgrade allows the flyer who has it to upgrade in the following ways: Main Cabin to first class on a domestic 2-class flight. Main Cabin/premium economy to business class on an international 2-class flight.

When booking your flight on aa.com, look for the Systemwide upgrades link to find flights with upgrade seats available. “Systemwide upgrades” will be displayed if there are enough upgrades available on the flight for the number of passengers you are requesting, and you have the appropriate number of upgrades in your account.

Complimentary upgrades may be confirmed up to 120 hours before your flight, although the actual timing will depend on your elite status tier.
