We define social class as a tradition line that reproduces itself from one generation to the next by passing on relevant capital and habitus traits as well as symbolically distinguishing itself from other classes, which is similar to E.P. Thompson’s (1963)

This paper first surveys a significant set of issues that are intertwined in asking whether social classes are real. It distinguishes two different notions of class: class as organized social entities and class as types of individuals based on individual characteristics.
