19 wrz 2016 · Short Distance Sailing And Rhumb Line Sailing. Posted on September 19, 2016 by Jack Case. In my previous post about the meridian passage long method, I demonstrated how the ‘Short Distance Sailing Formulas’ are used to calculate a vessel’s position at meridian passage.
Over a longer oceanic passage, it makes sense to travel on a Great Circle Circle than the Rhumb Line due to the extra time and energy involved. Sailing between Cadiz (Spain) and Miami (US), this could amount to a day’s sailing over the passage (150 NM less).
