Flights in Europe are taking off again – though they’re not yet back to pre-pandemic levels, new data shows. Commercial flights – defined as flights carrying passengers, freight and mail – grew 25% between August 2021 and August 2022, according to Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office.
Flights to/from Europe (intercontinental flows) are at -31% vs 2019 on 15 December. Charter (+25%), All-cargo (+8%) and Business Aviation (+6%) are above 2019 levels. The two other segments still below 2019 levels with: Traditional at -33% vs 2019 and Low-cost at -30%.
In 2020, the price levels for accommodation services and passenger transport by air (vis-à-vis January) have, since the summer, been below their relative average levels of previous years, and substantially lower than the price levels observed in 2019 (Chart B, panel b).
New requirements to travel to Europe. Entry/Exit System (EES) is the system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay in 29 European countries (starting in the second half of 2024). ETIAS is the Travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers to enter 30 European countries (starting in the first half of 2025).
