Created in 1999 out of the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut encompasses the traditional lands of the Inuit, the indigenous peoples of Arctic Canada. Its capital is Iqaluit.
With a population of 36,858 as of the 2021 Canadian census (up from 35,944 in 2016) consisting mostly of Inuit, and a land mass almost as large as Mexico, Nunavut's land area of 1,836,993.78 km 2 (709,267.26 sq mi) [2] has a population density of 0.022/km 2 (0.056/sq mi).
Nunavut, which means “Our Land” in Inuktut, is the newest, largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It was officially created on April 1, 1999, though the proposed boundaries had been drawn in 1992 after a plebiscite was held to confirm the division between Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Between 2006 and 2016, Inuit population of Nunavut grew by 22.5 per cent. In Nunavut, Inuit population forms a majority in all communities and is the only jurisdiction of Canada where Aboriginal peoples form a majority. As of 2016, there were 13,945 Inuit living in Quebec. The majority, about 11,795, live in Nunavik.
