I used to park free on street on Ardross st (by the cathedral). I'm not sure of that is still a free for all though. I'll be in Inverness tomorrow, I'll have a look around if I get the chance. Rose St is the best bet for long term parking in a secure location - it is a multistorey right beside the bus/rail stations.
Convenient drop-off and pick-up parking is available for free (first ten minutes). This is located at the front of the terminal building. This area is easily located via the signposting as you enter the car park.
Unfortunately there's no such thing as 'free' parking in Inverness, unless you leave your car in a Tesco car park - not ideal. However, the Rose Street car park is inexpensive for long term parking, and right in the city centre.
