Soldiers must know how to determine locations of points on a map, measure distances and azimuths, and identify symbols on a map. They must also be able to determine the elevation and relief of areas on standard military maps.
The scale of the map permits the user to convert distance on the map to distance on the ground or vice versa. The ability to determine distance on a map, as well as on the earth’s surface, is an important factor in planning and executing military missions.
1. Identify the scale of the map. The map scale is the ratio (1:50,000) of the distance on map (1 inch) relative to the distance on the ground (usually 50,000 inches). 2. Convert a straight-line map distance to miles, meters, or yards using the map's bar scale (Figure 071-329-1008-1). Figure 1.
