30 maj 2022 · Historic England recently launched two web-based tools, which provide free access to over 400,000 aerial photographs from the Historic England Archive and 30 years of aerial archaeology mapping.
You can calculate the length of a path, running route, fence, border, or the perimeter of any object that appears on a google map. The distance calculator will then display a measurement of the length in feet, meters, miles and kilometers.
William Roy described it as rather a ‘magnificent military sketch than a very accurate map of the country’. Roy’s surveying parties of about eight relied on simple surveying compasses to measure the angles, and chains up to 50 feet long to measure distance between important features.
