As others have said, the game does give you distance but only when building pipes, streets, powerlines, or similar. There isn't a Google Maps pin-dropping feature to just arbitrarily see distance, however you can just grab a road, click from start to end, and it will tell you the distance (and then right click or hit Esc to cancel the road)
