Lorber argues that the emergence of multiple gender identities in Western countries is not revolutionary; they resist but do not restructure the persistently gendered binary social structure. The erosion of gender boundaries – degendering -- can undercut gendered power inequalities and sustain the thrust toward a gender-equal social order.
