IFR flights use flight levels ending with the number 0: FL50, FL60, FL70, FL210, FL320 ... The cruise altitude or cruise flight level must be chosen using this assigned rule and must follow the semi-circular rule depending on the heading of the aircraft (see next chapter).
§ 91.179 IFR cruising altitude or flight level. Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, the following rules apply— (a) In controlled airspace. Each person operating an aircraft under IFR in level cruising flight in controlled airspace shall maintain the altitude or flight level assigned that aircraft by ATC.
The cruise altitude (flight level) for IFR flight must be chosen using these assigned rules and must follow the semicircular rules depending on the heading of the aircraft. Check the Semicircular rules documentation in order to get the full flight level table with explanations.
Appendix III Table of cruising levels. 1.1. The cruising levels to be observed are as follows: TRACK¹. From 000 degrees to 179 degrees. From 180 degrees to 359 degrees. IFR Flights. VFR Flights. IFR Flights.
For IFR flights. The default worldwide semi-circular rule is the East/West orientation of the flight level parity: - Your aircraft has track between 0° and 179°, your flight level or altitude must be odd. - Your aircraft has track between 180° and 359°, your flight level or altitude must be even.
1.1.2 Minimum levels Except when necessary for take-off or landing, or except when specifically authorized by the appropriate authority, an IFR flight shall be flown at a level which is not below the minimum flight altitude established by the State whose territory is overflown, or, where no such minimum flight altitude has been established:
