It is essential to inform about economic class syndrome in an attempt to encourage the Brazilian health and transport authorities to adopt some measures, in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry, to prevent venous thromboembolism.

The term economy class syndrome’ was first used in an article in 1988 by Cruick-shank (Cruickshank, Gorlin & Jennet, 1988) to describe three cases of thrombosis after long-haul air flights. This term may not be strictly accurate as the risk of thrombosis may also be increased when taking any long journey.
