Figure 3.2: Part of the map of Kapiri On most maps, a scale is usually represented as a straight line divided into several numbered units. This is called a linear scale or bar scale. It helps you to find how far one place is from another. It also helps you to measure distance along roads, railways and other linear features on the map.
straight_line_distance = sqrt ( ( x2 - x1 )**2 + ( y2 - y1 )**2 ); The variables x and y refer to co-ordinates in a two-dimensional plane and can reflect any unit of measurement, such as feet or miles.
In order to measure the straight-line distance between two places, you need to put your ruler on the map, placing it to run from one place to the other places. You will use the number of centimeters to work out the straight-line distance in kilometers.

Straight lines. A quick way to measure distance is to count each square you cross on the map. On your Ordnance survey map each grid square measures one kilometre from side to side and from top to bottom. If you go diagonally across a square, the distance will be a bit longer – about 1.5 km. .
