Children age 5 to 14 are not required to show an ID at the time of check-in, however, they are always encouraged to have some sort of ID on them during travel. Typically, minors under the age of 18 do not have to present identification for domestic U.S. travel. Airlines will accept identification from the responsible adult on behalf of the minor (s). For international travel, minors under the age of 18 must present the same travel documents as the adult.
Travelers 18 years of age or older need a valid, current U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID. It must have: Your name. Date of birth. Gender. Expiration date. The following IDs are acceptable: U.S. or foreign government-issued passport. U.S. passport card. Driver’s license or state ID that meets REAL ID standards. U.S. Military ID.
Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint. Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel. Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant.
You only need to contact Reservations if you’re traveling with an infant who is under 7 days old; or if you’re traveling outside of the U.S. (taxes and a percentage of the adult fare may apply on international trips).
Minor children under the age of 18, who are flying with their parents, do not need a Compliant Card. Unaccompanied minors who wish to fly commercially will need a Compliant Card or a Standard Card with other federally-approved documentation.
Traveling with Children. All passengers are required to undergo screening. However, TSA has developed modified screening procedures for children who appear to be 12 years old and younger. TSA officers will consult parents or the traveling guardian about the child’s screening.
