18 mar 2022 · Some military retirees have expressed their dissatisfaction with Home Depot’s recently changed discount policy, saying those who aren’t “tech savvy” may be left out.
As of January 1st, 2022 a veteran will not receive a 10% discount unless they have the Home Depot app installed. It must connect while you are inside the store during the purchase to give a unique code to scan. If it doesn't connect, you don't get a discount. Many elderly vets don't use smart phones, so now they WILL NOT get a 10% discount.
Now, whenever the card is used for any purchase, in store or online, the 10% Military Discount is automatic. Vets don't have to ask the cashier for it (which can feel a bit demeaning) and Lowe's cashiers don't have to ask for ID or hear complaints from vets' wives or others buying in the vet's name with the vet's money.

If you take advantage of the 10% off at Home Depot, starting with the new year they're going to be removing the ability for the registers to manually input it and you'll be required to use the Home Depot app. It also appears there's a 400$ a year cap on the discount.
