Fractions in Excel is a number format category that shows the specified value as a fraction instead of its decimal equivalent. The output is a number with a numerator and denominator, separated by a slash sign.
However, there may also be times when you want to work with fractions in Excel, such as 1/2 (one-half) or 2/3 (two-thirds), rather than use the decimal value. For example, let's say you have a recipe for chocolate chip cookies and you'd like to enter it into Excel.
The most straightforward method is selecting the fraction needed via excel’s “Format Cells > Fraction” feature by using Fraction format codes “# ?/?”, where #=integer before decimal point and ?=number of digits after decimal points.
Excel always reduces a fraction to its smallest denominator (bottom number of the fraction). If you enter the fraction 2/8, Excel converts the fraction to 1/4. However, you can use the As eights (4/8) type to fix the denominator to 8.
