15 lut 2024 · W-8 forms are used by foreign persons or business entities to claim exempt status from certain withholdings. There are five W-8 forms: W-8BEN, W-8BEN-E, W-8ECI, W-8EXP, and W-8IMY.
For US taxpayers, they generally are required to submit a form W-9. For nonresident aliens, they are required to file a form W-8BEN — for example, if there is a US institution that is required to withhold tax from non-resident alien (NRA) clients.
Use Form W-9 only if you are a U.S. person (including a resident alien), to provide your correct TIN. Caution: If you don’t return Form W-9 to the requester with a TIN, you might be subject to backup withholding. See What is backup withholding, later.
