Thyroid hormone is necessary for the health of all the cells in your body. Taking thyroid hormone is different from most medications, because its job is to replace a hormone that is missing. The goal of thyroid hormone treatment is to closely replicate normal thyroid functioning.
Small amounts of another and more potent thyroid hormone containing three iodine atoms, triiodothyronine (T3), are also made by the thyroid gland. However, most of the T3 in the blood is made from T4, via the removal of an iodine atom, in other body tissues.
T3 dosing: Most patients will need somewhere between 25-50mcg of T3 per day, potentially more but this is rare. The combination of 2 grains of NDT + 25-50mcg of T3 is very powerful and most of my patients live around here. Start with NDT dosing first, then switch to T3 dosing.
